 *A Short History

The firm has its origins in Potgieterrus where the late Mr Robert Dewar established a legal practice in 1923.  It is interesting to know that the late Mr Dewar was a member of the well-known Dewar family who is well-known in legal circles of the old province of Transvaal.  In this respect we can refer you to the firm known as Bell, Dewar & Hall in Johannesburg.  The late Mr Dewar was succeeded by Edward Rex Chapman during or about 1932.  In 1957 Nelson Borman relocated from Pretoria to Potgietersrus and joined the firm of E.R. Chapman.  Borman became a partner of the late Mr Chapman on 1 July 1958.  The practice was then known as E.R. Chapman & Borman.

This practice gradually developed and first of all J.P. Snyman and thereafter M.C. Barnard joined the firm and in the process the late Mr Chapman retired.  The name of the firm was initially Chapman, Borman & Snyman but was changed to Borman, Snyman & Barnard in due course.  The last mentioned firm became an incorporated practice.  It is until this day a successful practice in Mokopane (previously Potgietersrus).  This firm has developed over the years to a well-known practice in the Limpopo Province and has succeeded in building up relationships with various financial institutions, such as United Building Society and Volkskas Bank, which institutions have become ABSA Bank Limited, as well as Standard Bank and other commercial enterprises in Mokopane including well-known agricultural co-operatives.

As a result of the firm’s relationship with Nedbank, it also at one stage acquired an interest in a legal practice in Polokwane (previously Pietersburg), which firm is presently known as Niland & Pretorius.   Until recently the practice also had a branch office at Naboomspruit.

The Potgietersrus firm decided in 1985 to expand and, more specifically, towards the south of Potgietersrus.  A branch office was pursuant to the aforegoing established in Johannesburg in August 1985.  Our Mr Borman accepted responsibility for the local practice and relocated to Johannesburg at the end of 1985.  The two practices were segregated in 1989 with the eventual result that our firm became an incorporated practice with the name of Nelson Borman & Partners Incorporated in Johannesburg with service points at:  Sandton, Randburg, Blackheath and Florida.
